The album, Basement Brew, is available on Bandcamp, iTunes, Spotify, and more!

Released in January 2016, our freshman studio album explores our potential as a group. Diving head-first into our different influences, we combined forces to create a multi-genre'd musical piece that tells the stories of pain, justice, love, and redemption.

Many thanks to our family at House Studios for recording, mixing, and mastering Basement Brewwith such skill, expertise, and professionalism.

Our Story

Our Story

During one mid-winter Earth-month, five spirits from across the galaxy met in a distant cosmic ocean. Under the light of the 7th moon they joined forces to form a magnificent creature, ZODIAK.

When a group is naturally soulful, they tend to stand out from the rest of the pack.
— Bronsky Bryant, Vibes&Vino

Cemented together by an unyielding weld of funk and soul, the young band is on a mission to deliver smooth studio productions and high-energy live sets. As accomplished musicians hailing from a wide range of backgrounds, the band members have worked hard to develop a unique sonic blend of mainstream genres like rhythm and blues, pop, and rock and roll. However, ZODIAK remains steadfast in her DMV roots, frequently alluding to the go-go icons and kings of soul that have been a staple of music from the District.

In January 2016, ZODIAK uttered her first growl. Basement Brew, the band’s debut studio album, has been received with great warmth! The voice of singer-songwriter Zayani Sims is purely beautiful, often carrying a melody solo, but occasionally finding a partner to dance a harmonic vocal tango. Lyrics are supported by fluttering flute ad-libs, complex rhythms, succulent key changes, and passionate solos. Featuring an uplifting radio jam "Don't Be Debbie" and a sultry feel-good single "That's a Good Time," this album aims to ignite passion in its listeners and inspire optimism through a turbulent social environment.

ZODIAK continues to build on the momentum of their album release. They have amassed quite a following in the DMV, especially after playing big sets at the H Street Festival and National Cherry Blossom Festival. Their live sets are energetic, fun, and often sweaty! They bring love and light to all their performances, and aim to party more than to perform. Surely, the stars are only a launchpad for this bright young group!

@ZAYANIROSE | VOCALS, Flute, Guitar

Zayani's musical roots began at an early age with theory and piano training from her late mother. She branched into classical flute, joining the DC Youth Orchestra and high school and college jazz ensembles. At fifteen she began playing guitar and writing songs, performing any chance she could. Zayani has other work available on iTunes like "Tell Someone" (solo album) and "Gold" (SolStar collaboration). Zayani adds to ZODIAK's unique soulful blend with dulcet vocals and instrumental contributions.

Kyle.jpg

@Kyleeemz | Guitar, Bkg Vocals

As a boy, Kyle built a fleeting relationship with the violin. Though the classical instrument didn't stick, he took a liking to strings. "Once you go wire, you never retire." With dreams of becoming the next Eddie Van Halen, he picked up the guitar and began teaching himself simple chord structures and scale patterns. Due to bad practice habits, he still has not grasped these rudiments. Heavily influenced by years in the go-go game, his style of playing is percussive and decorative.

@Kirk.e.bones | keys

Kirk likes peanut butter sandwiches and hip hop and positive human beings. His favorite basketball player of all-time is Tracy McGrady and if his house was on fire he'd probably grab his phone and charger first (he thanks Apple for the mind control). Prince over MJ, Pac over Biggie, Pink Floyd over the Beatles, and J. Cole over everybody. He will happily debate any of the previous statements. Make music. Spread LOVE!!

@joelitoholmes | Bass guitar

Drummer as a caterpillar. Bassist as a butterfly. Joel is a lover of fine rhythm. J Haslip, A Blackstone, and J Morgan are among his most immediate influences, but he only desires to bring to life his own sound and inspire yours. Know that you'll only ever remember what you feel, and Jack & Ginger feel fine. Your vibe attracts your tribe. #ZDK
